Folkwangoperas

It’s time for an update!

It has been a little while since I auditioned for the Folkwang, and after Fairy Queen, the first project I got to join here, there have been several more nice projects and shows. Time for an update!

Ravel

We sang ‘l’Enfant et les sortilèges’. An opera by Ravel. Would you like to get a little impression of the University and rehearsals? Take a quick look at the youtubevideo where one of the students takes you backstage! (Also a nice way to train your German.) In the pictures you see the Tasse Chinoise and the Libellule, the parts I got to sing.

Wunderland

The Summerproject was a newly composed opera by Anno Schreier. A lot of new music! The story? Alice’s adventures in wonderland.

We played this show with a small orchestra and three singers. The soprano sang Alice and the baritone and I (Mezzo) sang all the other roles. The cat, a walrus, the duchess, the rabbit with te watch, Tweedledee & Tweedledum, the catterpillar, a mouse. How that works? Right. A lot of costumechanges. That was a very nice challenge every show! The table with props was packed with ears, tails and noses.

It was especially nice to play one of te shows for an audience of children!

Did you know?

In Germany and at the Folkwang, the year is divided in two semesters. One of them from October until the end of Januar, which they call the Wintersemester. The other from April until half July, the so-called Summersemester. Every semester, an opera is organised. The summerprojects are usually a bit smaller and the big ones play in the wintersemester. Mostly, multiple departments are involved. The dansers, actors and instrumentalists, we all work at the same project for a month or two.

A Midsummer Night’s Dream

Past winterproject we sang the opera A Midsummer Night’s Dream by Britten. The story, similar to Fairy Queen, is based on the original story by Shakespeare. But the music couldn’t be more different! On this picture: the role of Hermia.

I’m so excited for all the next projects that are to come. As soon as they and the performancedates are officially anounced, I will update the eventlist under ‘Calendar’. Until then, I hope!

Salone dell Opera at Vught 2017

Posted on

This weekend I had the honour to be understudy in a production of Salone dell’ Opera in Vught! This edition was extra special, because of the newly composed chamber opera by Jan-Peter de Graaff. It was amazing to do this world premiere of ‘De Grens’ and to work together with Saskia BonariusBut What About, Eva Kroon and Ginette Puylaert for whom the opera is originally composed.

Check out the facebookpage to read more about this opera that tells the story of emperor Wilhelm II who wants to cross the Dutch border as a refugee. Stay tuned, because more performances are coming up and a sequel will follow soon!

14th of May at Kamermuziekfestival The Hague!
